Green Values

One reason I'm running is to bring people together around shared values. I am an independent with green values. As a Green Independent, I can build bridges between progressives and conservatives on the four pillars of Green politics:

  1. Social Justice
  2. Grassroots Democracy
  3. Peaceful Relations
  4. Ecological Wisdom

I believe a commitment to these goals is widely shared among people in Brunswick, throughout Maine, and around the world. Brunswick is a community of green Democrats, green Republicans and green Independents. We may belong to different political parties, but green values unite us in common purpose.

I approach politics with the goal of inclusion, rather than exclusion. I'm independent of the two major parties, but I joined the Maine Green Independent Party because I believe that putting Ten Key Values into action will make Maine work better for everyone:

  1. Ecological Wisdom
We are part of our environment, not separate from it. We can live in ways that respect both the limits and the potential of natural systems to sustain human life.
  2. Personal and Global Responsibility
Our actions affect others. We can improve our own personal well-being, and at the same time foster peace, justice and harmony among all those living on Earth.
  3. Future Focus and Sustainability
We will leave a legacy. We can pursue long-term goals and enjoy our lives in ways that sustain the ability of future generations to enjoy their lives, too.
  4. Grassroots Democracy
Our democracy is of the people, by the people, and for the people. We can increase public participation at every level of government and reduce the advantages politicians can derive from close connections to the wealthiest and most powerful people in our society.
  5. Social Justice and Equal Opportunity
All people are created equal before the law. We can confront the age-old scourges of racism, sexism and discrimination against people in our society who have been persistently denied opportunities for unfair reasons.
  6. Feminism and Gender Equity
Relics of gender discrimination undermine social justice. We can replace an ethic of domination and control with a morality of conscience and cooperation.
  7. Respect for Diversity
Every person has value and every living system on Earth has meaning. We can learn from other people and places, and prevent the needless destruction of cultures and species.
  8. Decentralization
Sharing power promotes justice and peace. We can distribute decision making among individuals and local governments, while protecting the civil rights of minority groups.
  9. Community-based Economics and Economic Justice
We achieve more working together and using resources fairly. We can raise and maintain the standard of living for everyone globally while providing meaningful work opportunities and protecting ecosystems locally.
  10. Non-violence
Everyone has an inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We can resolve our differences without killing each other, respecting the golden rule of treating others as we'd like them to treat us.
